Excelling in Generosity
“What is your why?” What is your reason for wanting to do something? Asking this helps you identify priorities, set goals. Paul is identifying generosity as an area where the Corinthians needed to grow spiritually. In Paul’s time, if you wanted to learn something, you followed a model. Information exchange was not like it is today. Paul offered the churches of Macedonia as a model of generosity. Paul described three factors that led to the wealth of generosity of the Macedonian churches — 1. a severe ordeal of affliction; 2. abundant joy; 3. extreme poverty — a combination you would not expect to lead to generosity! Generosity is rooted in the grace of God. We give because we have received richly from God, from whom everything originates. If we don’t recognize that everything comes from God, we look for opportunities to accumulate more, instead of opportunities to give. The gift of generosity is a gift for both the giver and the recipient. What might it look like for us to see our lives as a channel of God’s Grace? What inspires your generosity?
