I have always been in a Baptist church, having been a member of three churches in my lifetime. The first was First Baptist Church of Altavista, VA. My grandfather was one of thirteen founding members of this church in 1909. I made a confession of faith and was baptized there at nine years of age and remained a member of the Altavista church until I married and moved to Clemson, SC. At that time John, my husband, and I joined First Baptist Church of Pendleton, (the first time in 1969) but then moved to Athens, Georgia where we were members of First Baptist Church of Athens. In 1974 we moved back to Clemson and joined again First Baptist Church of Pendleton (for the second time). We have remained members of First Baptist Church of Pendleton until this day. Currently, my church activities include serving as the Church Treasurer, co-teaching a Sunday School Class, singing in the Choir, and serving on the Deacon Council.
The Church has always been a present and active part of my life. Fortunately, I had parents who were excellent role models for me in this regard. Their encouragement and examples are a very large part of who I am today. Beyond my parents, these three churches have been welcoming and supportive and missional. I am truly blessed and thankful for all of those who were in these churches at the time I was there to love and encourage me in my faith.
Throughout my life, there have been special verses of scripture that have spoken to me for a time. The verse for me in this time is “And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8). However, there is one that has transcended throughout my life which is “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24).
